Mardi Gras success for New Orleans

The popularity of the latest New Orleans Mardi Gras was back close to pre-Hurricane Katrina levels, according to the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Between 700,000 and 800,000 people visited the city, with hotels 95 percent full. Around 30,000 of 38,000 hotel rooms available in the city are now fully operational following the hurricane.

“Mardi Gras 2007 exceeded our expectations,” said Stephen Perry, president and CEO of the NOMCVB. “Crowds of families, visitors and locals showed up in massive numbers, making Mardi Gras feel the same as it did before Hurricane Katrina. The success of Mardi Gras 2007 sends a message to the world that ‘soul is waterproof’ and the New Orleans experience is alive and well.”

At Complete North America we are pleased to report the French Quarter, Warehouse District and Garden District have fully recovered with Bourbon Street back to its vibrant best. Hotels are full of tourists and the shops and restaurants are bustling. Even the drive from the airport reveals little of the damage done to the city. Only if you decide to take the Hurricane Katrina coach tour will you see first hand the lasting damage done to the outer lying districts of New Orleans.

The Big Easy is one of our favourite city destinations with a vibrancy and character all of its own. We can arrange be-spoke visits to New Orleans and/or the surrounding Deep South region. Why not consider our 14 night Deep South drive programme. View itinerary
