NASA’s new visitor attraction set to open
NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex is putting the final touches to its new Shuttle Launch Experience.
The $60-million attraction is scheduled to open on 25th May 2007. It will take visitors on their own journey into space, to experience the sights, sounds and sensations of the space shuttle’s voyage to Earth’s orbit.
Designed in consultation with NASA and space shuttle astronauts, Shuttle Launch Experience will take visitors through the sensations of blasting into Earth’s orbit on an authentic ride experience, using sophisticated motion-based platforms, special effects seats and high-fidelity visual and audio presentations.
They will receive a pre-launch briefing, guided by veteran Shuttle Commander Charlie Bolden, who will then lead them through the launch sequence.
Passengers enter the crew pod in the shuttle’s cargo bay and strap in for launch. For the next five minutes, the pod’s 44 passengers feel, see and live the trip to 17,500 mph. The Shuttle bay doors then open for breathtaking views of Earth seldom seen in the first person.
