No change to the Visa Waiver scheme

Recent suggestions that the Visa Waiver Programme is to be scrapped for UK visitors are completely false and it remains the case that all passengers holding machine-readable passports (which is the overwhelming majority of visitors) can continue to holiday in the US with minimal formalities.

The only entry procedure changes planned are a change from the current two index finger scan to a full 10 finger scan but this is not expected to make the immigration process any longer. A digital photograph will also continue to be taken, as now.

Testing of the new 10-finger scan procedure will begin at 10 ports of entry this autumn including those most used by British visitors such as New York JFK, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

For the future, the US Senate is considering the introduction of Advanced Electronic Travel Authorisation (AETA), already used by the Australian government. This would simply mean that passengers data currently provided on visa waiver forms while en route to the US would be required 48 hours before departure. The information might be requested again inflight (as now) but there would be no other additional procedures.

All these measures will help to further streamline the whole entry process while further enhancing passenger security.

18 million risk ‘DIY’ summer holiday danger

ATOL logoUp to 18 million people who put together their own ‘DIY’ holidays this summer risk a financial disaster in the event of company failure, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned.

The CAA, which operates the ATOL financial protection scheme, is today urging consumers to check that their summer air holidays are financially protected.

Flights and accommodation booked separately as part of a DIY break are unconnected. This means that if an airline or accommodation provider ceases trading before consumers travel, holidaymakers could be forced to buy alternative, often more expensive, flights or accommodation. And if travellers cannot purchase new flights, they may be unable to claim back money already paid for the unused components of the holiday, such as hotels and car hire. Consumers could even run the risk of being stranded abroad if their airline went bankrupt during their break.

The CAA is highlighting to holidaymakers the benefits of booking all elements of a holiday together with a single, ATOL-protected travel company. ATOL is the UK’s only licensing scheme for travel companies selling air holiday packages, protecting around 27 million people each year from losing money or being stranded abroad if their travel company goes bankrupt. Travel companies are also responsible for all aspects of the holiday, so if one element goes wrong, the company will make alternative arrangements.

ATOL spokesman David Clover said: “Our research shows that although millions of holidaymakers will build DIY breaks this summer, they don’t always realise they are at risk. Holiday purchases are still a significant household purchase so we want consumers to make informed choices about financial protection. Those building their own holidays using different suppliers should be aware that they will not be protected against the risks of insolvency in the same way as booking all elements with one travel company.”

He continued: “Booking an entire holiday with one travel company does not mean that consumers have to compromise flexibility for protection. Many travel companies, will provide consumers with the type of holiday they want with the benefit of ATOL protection.

The Inn At Ormsby Hill - Manchester, Vermont.

New England Holidays 2 New England Holidays 5The Inn at Ormsby Hill is nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains in the town of Manchester, a location oozing the charm that typifies the New England state of Vermont.

Hotels are as good or bad as the people that run them. In the case of intimate B&B’s focused on providing a very personal lodging experience like The Inn At Ormsby Hill, this fact is even more profound. Thanks should be given then for The Inn At Orsmby Hill is the pride and joy of Ted & Chris Sprague, a couple who’s dedication and passion for New England Inkeeping is plainly obvious to all who are privileged enough to stay at the Inn.

Attention to detail is most notable - The rooms are exceptionally comfortable, and the decor provides the classic New England Inn experience we strive to provide - I just love the huge high beds that you need a step to climb onto - Real masterpieces and the focus of all rooms, quite rightly so. The rooms are of course spotless and feature private jacuzzi baths for two.

The effort Ted & Chris put in every morning at breakfast really does encapsulate everything that the New England B&B experience is all about - Take time to enjoy the fresh coffee or tea on the porch as you admire the surrounding mountain scenery before embarking on a day of exploration that Ted & Chris would be more than happy to help you plan - They have a huge collection of leaflets and maps!

Having enjoyed our stay immensely we would have no hesitation in recomending a stay at The Inn At Orsmby Hill as part of a self drive tour or as a stand alone visit arriving from the U.K. to New York or Boston.
