Quick facts:
Time Zone: GMT – 5
Flight time from UK: 8 hours 30 minutes
The Midwestern United States refers to the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Weather
In winter temperatures can fall below zero in many parts of the region while spring and autumn temperatures range from 10-20C. Summers in the Midwest tend to be humid and hot ranging from about 25-33C across many parts of the region.
Best time to visit
Winter may be vest avoided due to potential road closures due to snow but anytime from spring through to autumn is great. Avoiding the summer holidays will save you money on flights and also spare you the potentially intense heat in July / August.
Nature
The Midwest offers an abundance of natural sights such as the magnificent Great Lakes up north, the vast Northwoods, Badlands, Black Hills, Cuyahoga Valley, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Isle Royale National Park, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and more.
Tranquility
While of course you have the bustling cities of Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Cleveland and Detroit, away from the metropolises the Midwest is known for its peace and quiet offering great places to fish, horse ride, hike, view wildlife and boat.
Beaches
Though there’s no sea, the Midwest still offers some of North America’s best beaches all along the Great Lakes, especially those in Chicago where the beaches back right on to the city centre. The states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota all offer beaches too.
