Days 11 & 12
Bedford to Gettysburg
86 miles

Gettysburg is famous as the site of the biggest battle of the Civil War – it was here that Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address and generations of schoolchildren have grown up learning the significance of this small Pennsylvania town.

You can almost hear the drums of war beating within the stilling silence of the land at Gettysburg where the fate of America was changed forever. The landscape has been preserved to tell the story of war, yet honour the soldiers who fought valiantly for their cause.  It was at Gettysburg that the leaders of both the Union and Confederate armies who would ultimately play out the Civil War to its end, first met in gigantic and carefully strategised battles.  All seemed to understand that the outcome of the war would be determined on these grounds. Whoever prevailed would be likely to conquer.  In a bold attempt to invade Washington, DC from the north, the Confederate army amassed thousands of troops ready to take DC. The Union understood that the ground had to be held at whatever cost. The totally new visitors centre tells the story with a dramatic crescendo.

Within all of its important history, Gettysburg is more than just about battles.  Founded in 1797, more than 60 years before the Civil War, the town was settled by Scots-Irish settlers on their way to the Shenandoah Valley. Original buildings from this era still stand on Lincoln Square.

Gettysburg today is heaven for history buffs, but shoppers, antique collectors, outdoors enthusiasts, and railway enthusiasts can find plenty to do here as well. Walking tours give the visitor an up-close view of “the most famous small town in America.”

Day 13

Today, Lancaster is known as the home of the Amish, a religious group that eschews the hustle and bustle of modernity in favour of seclusion and simple living. The traditions of the Amish in Lancaster County date back to the 1720s when the Old Order Amish, the “Plain People” fled religious persecution in Europe.  Holding dear traditional values, they stress humility, family, community and separation from the world.  Not actually stuck in history, the Amish do change – they just examine it carefully before they accept it. Hearty Amish cooking and traditional crafts are popular with tourists, and the surrounding countryside is an antique-lover’s paradise.

Explore the true byways and backroads that illustrate the most authentic and traditional way of life. You’ll enjoy the quiet serenity of these crisp, immaculately kept areas, and an opportunity to leave the region refreshed and renewed in spirit.  Plan to enjoy the unique food of the Amish, the culture and quaint villages. Do I need a visa to travel to the usa?

In most circumstances, no visa is required for travel to the USA for any British Citizen passport holder and many other European passport holders, whose countries qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This program permits entry for up to 90 days for business or leisure purposes. Everyone must apply to use the VWP via the online Electronic System of Travel Authorization (ESTA).  Advice states this should be done online at least 72 hours prior to departure. On payment of the $14 fee this system usually issues an electronic confirmation within minutes but this is not guaranteed and there are certain criteria travellers must consider before applying via ESTA to use the Visa Waiver Program. Once granted the VWP authorization is valid for 2 years.

It is essential that everyone who plans to travel to the United States reads the information contained on the following page – Visa Waiver Program

Please note : From 21st January 2016 The United States implemented changes to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) as part of the Terrorist Travel Protection Act of 2015. One of the major changes implemented in January excludes any British National who has travelled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen since March 01st 2011 from using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Full details are contained on the above link but those affected will need to apply for a Visitor Visa with the U.S. Embassy before booking their travel arrangements.

You are advised to complete your ESTA prior to confirming any travel arrangements.

To use ESTA now please only use the following website – Official ESTA Website

Complete North America Limited cannot be held responsible for cancellation charges incurred by travellers who have booked travel and are subsequently unable to travel as part of the VWP or who are unable to obtain a Visitor Visa. If you have any questions after reading the information supplied above please speak to a member of our team.

Do I need a visa to travel to Canada?

British Nationals and travellers from other European countries can enjoy visa-exempt travel to and via Canada but must first use the online Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) at a cost of CA$7.00 per person. Most online applications are approved with minutes by email but the process can take longer particularly if supporting documentation is requested. An eTA is valid for 5 years and allows you to travel for up to 6 months on any one visit.

You are advised to apply for your eTA prior to confirming any travel arrangements.

For applications and full information on the scheme please only visit – Official Canadian Government eTA Website

Complete North America Limited cannot be held responsible for cancellation charges incurred by travellers who have booked travel and are subsequently unable to travel as part of the eTA scheme or who are unable to obtain a Visitor Visa.

If you have any questions after reading the information supplied above please speak to a member of our team.

Our holidays are too personalised and hand-crafted to book online. Please call during our office hours or provide us with some information below and we will get right on it so we can help you discover your next adventure.

This was to be a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. It was memorable for the range of new experiences, the lovely places we stayed, your kind gift of the Boston excursions card and the matchless hospitality of the Liberty Inn at Yarmouth

      Chisholm Party (New England)

I just wanted to thank you once again for all the planning, booking and organising that you did on our behalf. Each of the hotels were great and the hotel in Niagara had the best view of any hotel I’ve stayed in around the world

Watts Party (New England & Eastern Canada)

The Autumn colours were magnificent and we really enjoyed seeing the Pumpkin Festival celebrations in New England and then when we crossed the border, the Farmers markets and preparations for Thanksgiving in Canada.
