The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy (Spanish for Colorado) silt the river carried from the mountains.
Weather
Colorado has quite a complex climate due to its deserts, mountains, foothills and high plains. Typically, it is colder the higher in elevation you go. Winters can be cold as snow is expected as a norm throughout the state. Summer months aren’t devastatingly hot but temperatures average late in the 20’s to early 30’s.
Best time to visit
During the Summer months, June – September, the weather should be favourable and particularly warm. During the Winter months, November – April weather is less predictable and snowfall and road closures are common in many areas. In Autumn Colorado experiences a beautiful fall as the colours change.
