Weather

Spring and autumn are seasons of pleasantly warm days and cool nights. Summer daytime temperatures are generally in the 27-32C range, although they can occasionally reach 38C on very hot days. Winter daytime temperatures are generally in the 1 to 4C range.

Best time to visit

April, May, June, September and October are the best times to visit the Deep South, when the days are warm and the nights are cool and you avoid the intense heat that the summer brings. The world famous Mardi Gras in New Orleans takes place in February.

History

The complex history and heritage of the Deep South have created a distinctly American culture that is more a state of mind than a place. Although the Deep South romanticises antebellum plantation life, built on slavery, it is also the birthplace of the modern Civil Rights movement.

Music

There’s no better way to understand the life of the Deep South than to take a tour through its musical landscape – soulful blues, brassy jazz, country twang, Cajun accordions, riverboat calliopes and gospel choirs. There’s live music year-round across the whole region.

Culture & Cuisine

The Deep South has a unique culture that is more a state of mind than a place, and this culture is reflected in the cuisine. Restaurants come in all shapes, styles and sizes as does the sumptuous Southern specialties such as mint juleps, peach cobbler, fried chicken, barbecue ribs and more.
