Ships, from tall ships to naval vessels, can still be seen in the harbour, and old warehouses and shipfitters’ shops have become part of the exciting boardwalk along the waterside

Halifax

Enjoy a full day in Halifax! Founded in 1749 as the seat of British strength in North America, it sits on a rocky peninsula on the Atlantic coast. Halifax boasts two of the most important National Historic Sites in Canada. From the time of its founding in 1749 through the 19th century, Halifax was one of four principal overseas naval stations in the British Empire. The Citadel, overlooking the harbour, has been restored to the mid-Victorian period with a living history program. Pier 21 National Historic Site tells the stories of 1.5 million immigrants who passed through its doors. It is Canada’s last remaining ocean “immigration shed” and a national centre for celebrating Canada’s rich cultural diversity.

Halifax to Morell

After a drive through Nova Scotia’s countryside, you enter Prince Edward Island by taking the ferry from Caribou to Woods Island (not pre-bookable, operated on a first-come, first-serves basis). Continue to Brudenell where you might wish to stop at Brudenell Provincial Park. Your final destination today just up the road from Saint Peter’s Bay in Morell.

Morell to Charlottetown

Prince Edward Island features endless sand beaches, tiny farms, and picturesque country roads. . The colour contrasts of red soil, green fields and forests and blue sky and ocean make for wonderful holiday pictures.

Prince Edward Island National Park protects miles upon miles of beautiful coastline and features a 19th century wooden farmhouse, famous as the inspiration for the classic novel “Anne of Green Gables. Arrive in time to enjoy an evening in the vibrant city of Charlottetown, the provincial capital.

Charlottetown

Richibucto / Kouchibouguac NP

Kouchibouguac National Park is 238sq.km of river estuaries, beaches, coastal forests and fields, and has the warmest ocean water you will encounter on your trip. The Lagoons and salt marshes attract seals and large numbers of wild Canada Geese in season. Later in the afternoon you will have the opportunity to watch black bears in their natural habitat during “Little Big Bear Safari”.

Richibucto / Kouchibouguac NP to Caraquet / Tracadie-Sheila

This coast is lined with sand beaches and islands, making it excellent for beach and water sports like kayaking or windsurfing. Take a day to explore the picturesque town that is unofficially called Acadia’s capital by its residents. Caraquet hosts the annual Acadian Festival which takes place in the month of August. You may also want to visit the Village Historique Acadien, a historical reconstruction which portrays the way of life of Acadians in the 18th and 19th century.

Caraquet (The Forgotten Islands)

The islands of Lamèque and Miscou offer untouched nature with more than 250 species of birds, sandy beaches and a lighthouse. On Miscou Island you can visit the Ecological Park which includes almost every example of the Acadian Peninsula’s flora and fauna. The towns of Caraquet and Shippagan offer Acadian culture at its best with lots of festivals and a lifestyle devoted to the sea.

Caraquet to Fredericton

Follow the Miramichi – Canada’s most famous Atlantic salmon River. This modern road tracks an old lumberjack route through the forested heart of New Brunswick – explore the old wood covered bridges that cross the river. Continue to Fredericton, a vibrant riverside city rich in heritage, culture and nature where you can stroll along the river or explore the city by bicycle.

Why not visit one of the famous islands nearby: Deer Island where you can see ”The Old Sow”, the largest tidal whirlpool in the western hemisphere, or Grand Manan where whale watching is possible. The Bay of Fundy is one of the best whale watching areas in the world with more than 15 types of whales and dolphins are regularly seen – your package of course includes a whale watch tour!

Saint Andrews to Hopewell Rocks

Along the scenic Fundy Coastal Drive tiny fishing villages, rugged cliffs shaped by the sea, extensive mud banks, wet lands and beaches offer a huge variety of experiences. Twice a day the enormous Fundy tides move the equivalent of the amount of water running through all freshwater rivers on earth in and out the Bay. Explore the “Fundy Trail Parkway” in St. Martins. This short scenic drive, with its walking trails, viewpoints, and interpretive centre on the lumbering history of the area, is a good introduction to the New Brunswick coast of the Bay of Fundy.

Hopewell Rocks

Fundy National Park, 206sq.km in area, is a sanctuary of steep coastal cliffs and clear streams, with ocean-side forests, green meadows, sparkling rivers and gorgeous hiking trails. Admission for Fundy is included into your package.

The Hopewell tidal experience site (a Provincial Park) is the best place to witness and understand the tides. Iron stairs lead down the cliffs to the beach and at low tide you can walk through nearby Hopewell Rocks, shaped like giant vases, which are almost covered by the tide every six hours; a large clock warns you to leave as the tide comes in.
